#PrintChat Profile: David Brimble

Q1: Who are you, and what do you do?

David Brimble, UK based freelance Print Production manager. I offer a range of book publishing related services to people requiring a lot or a little help developing book or print projects. Often they are self-publishing professionals in other fields, such as photographers, or they can be agencies or individuals needing print project help.

Q2: When did you know you were hooked on print?

I worked in-house in book publishing for a long time, and the first colour illustrated book I worked on changed everything. I loved the reproduction element, handling transparencies, working with the photographer, colour proofing and then seeing the project right through to the press pass. Not having had any formal training or education in print I had to properly learn and think about colour for the first time, and I found it fascinating. Still do.

Q3: What industry trends should we be watching this year?

Shot-run digital printing is a key ongoing research topic for me, as is Augmented Reality. Developments which allow the print and digital worlds to work together more are fascinating and important for the future of print.

Q4: What are three resources for awesome industry info – besides PrintMediaCentr of course!

Well in the UK you have to keep in touch with Print Week. Ink on da Paper is great because its about the work and the craft rather than trade news as such. I enjoy less print-specific, design focused sites, like Its Nice That which are full of inspiration about what print can do. The print media can seem quite dry and business-focused. Despite having no design skills whatsoever I love to see what creative people are doing with print.

Q5: Why do you #PrintChat? Why should others join in?

As someone who buys and manages print its important to know what excites and concerns people on the print side of the fence. Whether its a new process, bit of kit, issue or blog I learn something every time, even if the topic doesn’t always seem directly relevant to me to begin with.

Q6: How can people connect with you?
